The quadripartite incuse square on the reverse constitutes one of the most emblematic features of Kyzikos' coinage. This reverse design also served an essential practical purpose: it allowed users of the currency to examine the interior of the flan and ensure that it was indeed composed of precious metal. At a time when the use of coinage was gradually developing, establishing confidence among users was essential to ensure the acceptance of this new instrument of exchange.
