In the Greek World, the boar was a symbol of strength and courage in the Greek imagination. The representation of the boar on this hekte may evoke one of the twelve labors of Herakles: the capture of the Erymanthian boar. Ordered by Eurystheus to bring back alive this formidable creature that was ravaging the region of Mount Erymanthus, Herakles pursued it until he exhausted it in the snow, before capturing it and carrying it back on his shoulders. This feat once again demonstrates the hero’s mastery over the wild forces of nature.
References to Herakles and the myths associated with him are recurrent in coinage of Kyzikos. They reflect the importance of the hero within the religious and mythological imagination of the city, particularly due to his role in traditions connected with the Argonauts and the mythical origins of Kyzikos.
