The ram's horns identify the deity depicted as Zeus Ammon, the patron God of Cyrene, renowned for his oracular sanctuary at Siwa. This figure is the result of a religious syncretism between a local Libyan deity, assimilated to the Egyptian God Amun—traditionally represented with ram's horns—and Zeus, the supreme deity of the Greek pantheon. The depiction of Zeus Ammon on this Kyzikos' stater is nevertheless distinguished by a somewhat unusual iconographic treatment. Traditionally, the God is portrayed in an entirely human form, with the ram's horns serving as his sole distinguishing attribute. Here, however, the engraver also endowed him with a ram's ear. This iconographic feature appears on all Kyzikos' coins depicting Zeus Ammon and thus constitutes a characteristic trait of the Kyzikos' issues dedicated to this deity.
