This archaic-style stater depicts Herakles, a figure closely linked to the mythical history of the city. According to legend, driven by the Thracian winds, the Argonauts, accompanied by HeraKles, landed at Kyzikos, where they were warmly welcomed by the young king Kyzikos during his wedding celebrations. The next morning, the Argonauts climbed Mount Dindymus to determine the route to follow, leaving Herakles in charge of guarding the Argo. At that moment, giants appeared and attacked the ship, hurling huge blocks of stone into the harbour to block it and prevent the expedition from departing. A fierce battle ensued between the giants and Herakles, soon joined by his companions. The attackers were defeated one by one after a brutal struggle. The Argonauts then resumed their journey at sea, but a contrary wind drove them back once more to the shores of Kyzikos. In the darkness, the king, believing he was under attack by the Pelasgians, mobilised his men. A clash followed: the Argonauts prevailed, and in the confusion Kyzikos was killed, struck by an arrow shot either by Jason or by Herakles. At dawn, the Argonauts realised the magnitude of their mistake. Overwhelmed with remorse, they organised lavish funeral rites for the king, then purified themselves by offering a sacrifice to Rhea on the heights of Mount Dindymus.
