Description

Mysia Kyzikos. Electrum Stater circa 450-400 BC. Lion crouching left, tuna fish left below / Quadripartite incuse square. 15,90g. SNG France –; von Fritze 83, pl. III, 2; Warren 1530. Rare. Perfectly sruck and centred on a large flan. Extremely fine. Provenance: NGSA 6 (30 November 2010), 80. NAC 116 (1 October 2019), 163. Lion representations are recurrent in coinage of Kyzikos, as this animal constituted a powerful symbol associated with strength, courage, and prestige. The presence of the lion on this stater probably reflects the influence of religious traditions originating from Anatolia and perhaps beyond, where the feline was closely connected with cosmic forces. Associated with the sun, light, and the renewal of the day, the lion gradually became a symbol of both divine and earthly power. This symbolic dimension explains, in particular, its connection with royalty in Lydia. On this remarkable stater, the lion may also allude to Aphrodite-Astarte, a deity associated with Cybele. The depiction of this animal on this coin thus illustrates the richness of the cultural influences that shaped the religious and symbolic identity of the city, situated at the crossroads of the Greek, Anatolian, and Oriental worlds.
