The earliest issues of Samos are distinguished by an irregular, not entirely smooth surface. Later, figurative representations appear, still set against this same background. The most famous type shows a panther’s head, an animal closely associated with Dionysos, the God of wine and drunkenness. This iconographic choice is all the more meaningful given that Samos was a wine‑producing island, renowned since antiquity for the quality of its vineyards.
