Description

Ionia Uncertain mint. Electrum Stater, Milesian standard, circa 500-480 BC. Forepart of lion right, dotted body truncation / Rectangular incuse punch with irregular surfaces. 14,03g. Hurter, Essays Hersh, 39 (same dies); cf. Leu 57 (25 May 1993), 105 (same dies); cf. Tkalec (23 October 1992), 112 (same reverse die). Of the highest rarity. Apparently only the third and by far the finest specimen known. Extremely fine. Provenance: Privately purchased from Tkalec in 1993. NAC 92 (23 May 2016), 197. NAC 114 (6 May 2019), 245. The lion is a recurring figure in the electrum coinage of Asia Minor. The archaic Greek depiction of the lion is characterized by a powerful, stylized, and deliberately expressive aesthetic. Engravers favored massive forms, manes rendered in geometric strands, and exaggerated features — oversized eyes, wide‑open jaws, tense muscles — to convey the animal’s strength. In archaic art, the lion was never represented realistically: it functioned as a symbol of power and courage, often associated with royalty or with deities such as Apollo, which explains its frequent appearance on coins, temple pediments, and votive objects.
