Description

Ionia Uncertain mint. Electrum Hemihekte circa 600-550 BC. Head of roaring lion right / Incuse quadripartite square punch with rough surfaces. 1,31g. Linzalone 1123 (Smyrna); cf. Rosen 313 (Uncertain Ionia, Hekte) and 348 (same, 1/24 stater); cf. SNG Kayhan 708-710 (Uncertain Ionia, 1/24 staters). Rare and exceptionally well struck. As struck. Provenance: Heritage 3076 (5 September 2019), 30130. From the very beginnings of coinage in Asia Minor, issuing authorities quickly understood the need to strike small denominations suited to everyday exchanges. This hemihekte of the 6th century BC — weighing just over one gram and equivalent to 1/12 of a stater — illustrates this development perfectly: it served for ordinary payments, whereas staters, too heavy and too valuable, were reserved for major transactions, particularly in maritime trade. The appearance of these fractional denominations reveals the growing sophistication of archaic monetary systems and the ability of the mints of Asia Minor to adapt rapidly to the real economic needs of the cities. Working with such tiny denominations forced engravers to display extraordinary skill, achieving remarkably delicate designs in precious metal.
