The earliest coins had a globular shape and were devoid of any design. Gradually, simple motifs appeared, consisting of striations and incuse squares, as illustrated by this extremely rare stater. It stands as a valuable witness to this decisive phase in the history of coinage. It follows the Lydo‑Milesian standard, based on a stater of about 14 ,15g, then in use in Lydia and Ionia.
