Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. The obverse of this hekte depicts a key figure from the myth of Herakles: Omphale, the Lydian queen to whom the hero had to submit in order to atone for the murder of Iphitus. According to the myth, Hercules was forced to wear women’s clothing and spin wool, while Omphale donned his lion skin and carried his club, thus reversing their roles. This is why the mythical queen is shown with the attributes of Herakles on this coin. A widow of King Tmolus, she was connected to the mountain of the same name in Lydia, which was the principal natural source of electrum in the kingdom.
