Description

Ionia Phocaea. Electrum Hekte circa 500-480 BC. Bearded head of Ares left with helmet ornamented with bud and two tendrils on long stem, small seal left under neck truncation / Irregular incuse square. 2,57g. Bodenstedt 44 (unlisted dies); De Luynes 2643; Pozzi 2505; SNG von Aulock 2643. An exceptional coin. Provenance: CNG Triton XI (8 January 2008), 239. Displayed at the White Gold exhibition in 2012. Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection.. Ares, the Greek God of war, embodies the violence of battle, impetuosity, and warrior fury. In mythology, he often appears as a figure both feared and respected, accompanying heroes and intervening directly in the most decisive clashes. In this context, depicting his portrait on coinage may have offered a city like Phocaea a way to assert its military strength, its ability to defend itself, and its warrior prestige. By associating their civic identity with Ares, the Phocaeans projected across the Mediterranean an image of power and determination, reinforcing their reputation as bold navigators and founders of colonies.
