This is one of the earliest struck monetary types : a witness to the birth of coinage. The first coins bore no motifs, but geometric designs soon appeared, as on this trite, marking an intermediate stage before the introduction of figurative representations. This coin therefore perfectly illustrates that pivotal moment when engravers began to embellish coins, paving the way for the complex iconography that would soon characterize Greek coinage.
