The calf represented in incuse on the reverse was the civic emblem of Mytilene. The lion was associated with several deities, such as Apollo, the principal God of Mytilene. The lion on the observe can be understood as a substitute for Apollo—especially given that Apollo’s bust later replaced the lion’s head on following issues.
