Description

Troas Abydos. Electrum Stater, Lydo-Milesian standard, cica 520-480 BC. Eagle standing left, head right, on dotted ground line; to left, dolphin downward; floral symbol to right / Incuse square, roughly bisected by a thick line, with each section containing irregular marks. 14,13g. Marchand A5 = SNG München 1 = Baldwin pl. II, 4 = Traité I 350 = Head, HN, p. 538 = Head NC, p. 265, pl. VII, 7 (same obv. die); otherwise unpublished. Extremely rare. Two pieces known. The only one in private hands. Minor die rust. Near extremely fine. Provenance: Jonathan P. Rosen Collection, Roma XII (29 September 2016), 233. CNG Triton XXIII (14 January 2020), 323. Many numismatists, including Marchand and Kraay, have attributed this issue to the period of the Ionian Revolt (499–493 BC), in which Abydos took part. Nevertheless, the overall style appears more archaic: the dolphin shows a primitive form, the eagle is rendered in an archaic manner, and a curious symbol appears to the right of the bird. The reverse also resembles the staters of Chios and other uncertain mints dated to around 525–500 BC. Taken together, these stylistic and technical features suggest that this type may predate the Ionian Revolt. It would therefore represent the earliest known coinage of Abydos.
