Pegasus, the famous winged horse of Greek mythology, is the son of Poseidon and Medusa. Associated with the hero Bellerophon, who succeeded in taming him with the help of Athena before using him to defeat the Chimera, he embodies divine power, speed, and elevation toward the celestial realm. Pegasus occupies an important place in Greek coin iconography, particularly on the coinage of Corinth, where he appears as a recurring emblem of the city. These Corinthian issues may have served as a model for the engravers of Lampsakos in the creation of this stater, thus illustrating the circulation of iconographic motifs between Greek cities.
