Description

Mysia Kyzikos. Electrum Stater circa 360-350 BC. Eagle, wings spread, flying right, tuna fish below. All within circle / Quadripartite incuse square. 16,06g. BMC Mysia -; Greenwell 152; SNG France 349; Traité II 2791, pl. CLXXVII, 27 (same reverse die); von Fritze 221, pl. 6, 33 (same reverse die); Warren 1577. Extremely fine. Provenance: Leu 48 (10 May 1989), 217. Displayed at the White Gold exhibition in 2012. Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. According to Greenwell, the disc shown behind the eagle represents the sun and thus refers to Helios, the solar deity. This interpretation is all the more plausible given that the prosperity of Kyzikos depended closely on its harvests, and therefore on favorable weather conditions. In the same vein, the eagle would evoke Zeus, king of the Gods but above all master of the sky: he unleashes lightning, regulates rainfall, causes droughts or floods, and commands the winds. The obverse of this coin may therefore be understood as a tribute to the divine powers responsible for the climate, guarantors of good harvests and, consequently, of the city’s economic growth.
