BMC Mysia 22, 34; Traité I, 288bis, pl. VII, 7; cf. von Fritze 165, pl. V, 13 (Stater). Good extremely fine. Provenance: Privately purchased from Tradart in November 2009. Displayed at the White Gold exhibition in 2012. Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. Orestes is one of the most emblematic figures of the mythological cycle of the Atreids, the illustrious royal lineage of Mycenae marked by family tragedies and bloodshed. Son of Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks during the Trojan War, and Clytemnestra, he is compelled to avenge the murder of his father, who was killed by his wife and Aegisthus upon his return from the conflict. On Apollo’s command, Orestes commits the terrible act of murdering his own mother, provoking the wrath of the Erinyes, the vengeful deities responsible for punishing crimes committed against family bonds. Orestes finds refuge at Delphi in the sanctuary of Apollo, where he kneels beside the Omphalos (the sacred stone) in order to be purified by the God. It is precisely this moment that is represented on the obverse of this hekte. Unable to fully atone for his crime at Delphi, Orestes travels to Athens, where he is tried before the Areopagus, the sacred court of Athens, under the protection of Athena. The Goddess intervenes in the trial and grants him purification, bringing an end to the cycle of vengeance that had devastated his family. The reference to a hero so deeply associated with Athenian mythological identity on Kyzikos' coins provides further evidence of the intensity of cultural and religious exchanges between the two cities and illustrates the influence exerted by Athens on the symbolic imagination of Kyzikos.
