Description

Mysia Kyzikos. Electrum Stater circa 375-350 BC. Zeus draped below the waist, half kneeling right on tuna fish, right hand holding scepter, left hand supporting eagle with spread wings above his knee / Quadripartite incuse square. 15,95g. De Luynes 2449; Greenwell, 2, pl. I, 2; SNG France 296; von Fritze 145, pl. IV, 32; Warren 1422. An exceptional specimen. Provenance: NGSA 5 (2 December 2008), 102. Displayed at the White Gold exhibition in 2012. Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection.. Kyzikos, a major commercial city of the Propontis, owed its prosperity to its exports: fruit, renowned wine, and grain. The Mysian plain was indeed an extremely fertile territory, cultivated all the way to the shores of Lake Aphnitis. This agricultural wealth was accompanied by cults intended to protect the harvests, livestock, and those who worked them. Among these, Zeus Olbios held a central place: as God of the sky, rain, winds, and lightning, Zeus Olbios watched over the fields, animals, and farmers, as attested by several dedications discovered near Kyzikos. Zeus Chalzios was also invoked to protect the crops from hail, a sign of the importance accorded to divine protection in a city whose prosperity depended closely on the land. The obverse of this stater, depicting the king of the Gods, echoes these various cults practiced at Kyzikos.
