Mysia Kyzikos. Electrum Hemihekte circa 400-360 BC. Laureate head of Zeus facing three-quarters right; tuna-fish right below / Quadripartite incuse square with mill-sail pattern. 1,31g. Liewald II 182 (this coin); cf. von Fritze 182 (Stater). A lovely specimen of beautiful style. Provenance: Leu 57 (25 May 1993), 100, Rendering a three-quarter portrait on a coin was a technical feat that only the greatest engravers of the Greek world were capable of achieving. Accomplishing such a result on a hekte weighing little more than one gram represents a true artistic tour de force. This magnificent coin bears witness to the exceptional talent of the engravers of Kyzikos, who succeeded in giving the face of Zeus remarkable depth and striking expressiveness. At a time when Kimon was captivating the Greek world with his celebrated Syracusan tetradrachms featuring the facing head of Arethusa, the engravers of Kyzikos demonstrated that they too were capable of innovation, pushing the boundaries of the art of coin engraving.
