Description

Mysia Kyzikos. Electrum Stater circa 400 BC. Head of Aphrodite left, wearing stephane, tuna fish below / Quadripartite incuse square. 16,01g. Gulbenkian 643; SNG France 287; SNG von Aulock 7316; von Fritze 135, pl. IV, 21; Waren 1451. A splendid coin of great style. Provenance: Christie’s London (7 October 1986), 117. Leu 81 (16 May 2001), 248. NGSA 7 (27 November 2012), 211. Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. Kyzikos maintained a close connection with Aphrodite, whose cult was attested there in several forms. The city notably honored Aphrodite Agoraia, protector of the marketplace and guarantor of the commercial transactions that ensured the prosperity of the city. Epigraphic documents also mention Aphrodite Pontia, invoked to ensure the safety of sea journeys—an essential protection for a city oriented toward navigation and trade. Aphrodite therefore occupied a significant place in the religious and civic identity of Kyzikos, and it is entirely logical that her portrait should appear on the staters issued by the city.
