Description

Mysia Kyzikos. Electrum Stater circa 400 BC. Silenus kneeling left on tuna fish and taking a kantharos to his lips / Quadripartite incuse square. 16,06g. BMFA 1507; Gillet 1066 (this coin); Jameson 2567 (this coin); SNG France 318; Traité II, 2704, pl. CLXXV, 28; von Fritze 173, pl. V, 21; Waren 1464. Good very fine. Provenance: Robert Jameson Collection (1861-1942), 2567. Charles Gillet Collection (1879-1972), 1066. Leu 20 (25-26 April 1978), 116. Leu 59 (17 May 1994), 123. Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. The city of Kyzikos was surrounded by vast vineyards that produced a renowned wine exported throughout the Mediterranean. In this context, it is hardly surprising that figures associated with the Dionysian world appear on its staters. Silenus, shown here on the obverse raising a kantharos to his lips, perfectly embodies this universe: a satyr, tutor and inseparable — and almost always drunken — companion of Dionysos, God of wine and festivity. His presence on the coinage of Kyzikos thus reflects the essential role of viticulture in the local economy. Silenus also appears on other Greek coinages, notably in Sicily: the tetradrachm of Aetna is the most famous example.
