Description

Mysia Kyzikos. Electrum Stater circa 500-460 BC. Winged female figure running left, head turned right, holding tuna fish in right hand and her chiton belt in left hand / Quadripartite incuse square. 16,08g. BMC Mysia 21, 25; De Luynes 2430; Greenwell 58, pl. III, 8; Kraay-Hirmer 705 (same obverse die); Kunstwerk der Antike F3 (this coin); Traité II, 281, pl. VII, 1 (same obverse die); von Fritze 121, pl. IV, 7. An exceptional specimen. Good extremely fine. Provenance: Robert Käppeli Collection (1900-2000), F3, published in 1963. Displayed at the White Gold exhibition in 2012. Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. The identity of the female figure holding a tuna on the obverse of this stater remains uncertain. Several specialists have suggested that she may represent Aphrodite‑Astarte, a divinity whose cult is attested at this period, notably in Syria. Waddington instead proposed Isis, the great Egyptian Goddess, or Nike, an interpretation now regarded as the most convincing. Indeed, Nike, the personification of victory, is frequently depicted in Greek art in the form of a winged woman.
