In Greek mythology, Europa, daughter of Agenor, king of Tyre in Phoenicia, was at the center of a famous episode involving Zeus’s amorous deception. While she was near Sidon, the God took the form of a magnificent white bull in order to approach her without arousing her suspicion while also avoiding the anger of his wife Hera. Captivated by the animal, Europa climbed onto its back and was carried away by Zeus to Crete, where some traditions place her arrival at Gortyn, while others locate the event further north, near the Bosporus.
In Crete, Zeus abandoned his animal form and united with Europa in his divine guise. Their union produced three famous sons: Minos, the legendary future king of Crete; Rhadamanthus, associated with justice in the afterlife; and Sarpedon, who later left Crete and settled in Cilicia. Europa subsequently married Asterion, king of Crete, who raised her children. This magnificent stater therefore depicts the abduction of Europa by Zeus, transformed into a bull: one of the most celebrated episodes of Greek mythology.
