Description

Mysia Kyzikos. Electrum Hekte circa 550-475 BC. Sphinx, front paw right lifted, standing left on tuna fish / Quadripartite incuse square. 2,62g. Greenwell 99; SNG Lockett 2690; Traité I, 297; von Fritze 127. Good very fine. Provenance: Leu 71 (24 October 1997), 189. NGSA 5 (3 December 2008), 105. Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. The sphinx depicted on the obverse of this hekte is traditionally associated with Dionysus. This association is hardly surprising given that the city of Cyzicus was surrounded by vineyards and that a statue of Dionysus stood at the heart of the city. However, Mikhail G. Abramzon and Nina A. Frolova, who have extensively studied electrum coinage, suggest that the engravers of Cyzicus simply adopted the iconography of the staters and hektes of Chios, on which the sphinx is a recurring motif. According to this interpretation, this hekte would represent an appropriation of the monetary iconography of another city.
